All food businesses must comply with food standard regulations UK. This is usually assessed during a food safety inspection.
What is Food Standard?
Food standard looks at a set of criteria that food must meet to be suitable for human consumption such as source, composition, appearance, freshness, permissible additives, and food allergens. It also requires that food is correctly labelled and adheres to food labelling regulations.
Food Standard for Catering Businesses
Any food business that produces prepacked for direct sale (PPDS) food is required to label it with the name of the food and a full ingredients list. Allergenic ingredients must be emphasised within this list. These labelling requirements, also known as Natasha's Law, help protect consumers by providing potentially life-saving allergen information on the packaging. This can include food that consumers select themselves, for example from a display unit, as well as products kept behind a counter, or some food sold at mobile or temporary outlets.
eKatering-consult experienced staff will be able to assess your dishes with you and create a food allergen matrix, as well as advise you on cross-contamination issues concerning food allergens.
Food Standards for manufacturers
If you import food directly from outside the UK, you must comply with current food standard laws that apply to certain foodstuffs, import restrictions and further requirements on labelling, packaging and product composition.
eKatering-consult will assist you in ensuring compliance with all current regulations.
Food Standard for Importers
If you are an importer of Product of Animal Origen (POAO) or Food Not Of Animal Origin (FNAO) you are required by law to comply with current regulations. Non-compliance can be very costly for your business. Complying with these regulations ensures the food you import and put into the UK market is safe for customers.
Specific regulations are in place for certain foods such as:
· Meat, fish, chicken etc. (POAO).
· High-risk foods that are either known to be or are, an emerging risk to public health (FNAO)
· Foods from certain third countries are subject to special conditions due to contamination risk by aflatoxins.
· Composite product foodstuff that contains both processed animal products and products of plant origin.
eKatering-consult will assist you to ensure you have all the correct documentation in place to ensure your import complies with UK requirements and as such reduce the risk of your cargo being destroyed or returned.
